Description
Antique ring with Perpignan garnets in 18 karat rose gold (750). The marquise-shaped ring features a center navette-cut garnet surrounded by ten round-cut Perpignan garnets. The main garnet is mounted on a structure fixed by attachments/rings at the head of the ring. The Perpignan garnets are mounted on thin gold foils (paillons) and set in a closed setting. They typically exhibit a rare raspberry, pink-red color, typical of Perpignan jewelry, with a range of nuances that reveal themselves in sunlight. The ring’s shank is decorated with openwork flowers on the shoulders.
These faceted stones on top but flat underneath are referred to as “Perpignan cut” or “rose cut.” The gold structure is finely decorated with V-shaped triangular figures on the edges, and the gem settings have a domed bottom. This regional marquise ring dates back to the early 19th century in France.
Horse head hallmark (1838-1919), an owl hallmark, and an illegible goldsmith hallmark.
