Men rings


Men’s rings have always existed, or at least for 4000 years since they were found in the tombs of the Pharaohs. Social marker, object of passion, political, religious, it is a jewel which crosses the ages. The most famous rings for men are the signet rings. The French term “chevalière” goes back to the Middle Ages, to the time of chivalry. But many women now wear signet rings and they are no longer reserved only for men.

So these gentlemen, what did and do they wear? We can find bishop’s rings, with large amethysts, Greek-Roman intaglios or 19th century intaglios made during the neo-classicism. Revolutionary rings, rings of feelings full of promises and memories of the loved one. Modernist rings, heavier, more geometric.     Victorian double snake ring in yellow gold 18 karats (750) and silver. This ring is made by two snakes wrapping around the finger. The heads of the two reptiles are surmounted by a Dutch rose-cut diamond. The heads are delicately chiselled and come to rest on the two rows formed by the body of the animal. Antique ring, France, Victorian period, late 19th Century.

    Antique religious ring in pink gold 18 karats. Ring with three symbols in its center, also called “the three virtues”. On the left, there is a navy anchor representing hope; in the center, a heart on fire symbolizing charity and finally on the right the cross representing faith. The three virtues are represented in gold on a blue enamel background. The ring is openwork with eleven raised dots. The latter allowed the wearer to scratch his tens serving as a rosary. Antique ring of the 19th century.

    Georgian mourning hair ring in 14k pink gold. An antique locket ring keeping a braid of hair enclosed behind glass crystal. It is framed by a halo of 16 seed pearls and the settings is formed by two separated strands adorned with an openwork pattern. Jewel from the beginning of the 19th century, circa 1810-1830.

    Hair jewellery was very popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Jewellery with compartments made it possible to keep a lock of hair of a lover or a missing person (later it will be the photograph). It can be a medallion or a ring for example.  There are also jewels made from hair, such as necklaces, chains, bracelets and rings. These hair jewels are worked like textiles: they are woven, embroidered, twisted. A whole craft industry developed around this new fashion, which lasted until the end of the 19th century.

It is decorated with a man in profile, probably a Roman emperor, in an entourage of writing, now illegible. The soulders and ring is made of 18 karat gold, after the central profile. Ring for man or woman, mixed jewellery.

    The gold of the ring has been tested and inspected.

    Commemorative ring Napoleon III Emperor. This is a simple ring in bronze. On the inside, it bears the inscription “Napoleon III Emperor”. The message is highlighted by a dotted frieze. The inscription is partially faded. This is due to the wear and use of the ring by its former wearer. Some rare models of this ring exist with the date “1863”. Memorial jewel, circa 1860.

It is most probably a hunting dog, Spaniel Brittany type. The miniature is painted on a white background (it could be ivory or vellum). 19th century ring, Victorian period, probably from England.

    Conservation : this ring is very old and has a miniature, it should not be worn near water (shower, washing up, bathing)

    Condition: good general condition of the miniature. Some iridescence visible under the paint. Traces of oxidation, traces of soldering on the ring.

    Georgian mourning ring in 10k pink gold. This a sweet oval locket ring holding a braid of hair enclosed behind crystal. The braid is surrounded by a halo of 19 pearls and the panel is sat upon a delicate band separated into 3 openwork strands. The inscription : « Elizabeth Yve ob 2 sept.1810 aet 79 » inside the ring, indicating the date of death and the age of the personn. Jewel from the beginning of the 19th century.
