Black star earrings

Black star earrings in 18 karat pink gold (750). These earrings are centred with black glass cabochons imitating jet, it is called “glass of Paris”. The cabochon is decorated in the centre with a radiating star and a notched frieze. French earrings called “dormeuses” dating from the late 19th century. They were often worn by ladies during periods of mourning that were observed for months.

Note: the breakage system works. The loop goes through the back of the ear and closes on the front of the lobe. For pierced ears.

Gemological point: England is the country where one found the most jet stones, that’s why the fashion of the mourning jewels, which occurred after the death of prince Albert, could last so long. In France, it was also available, but in smaller quantities, so this fossil gem was replaced by “verre de Paris”, simply opaque, black glass.
