Description

Art Nouveau mermaid ring in solid 18-karat yellow gold (750). This Art Nouveau ring featuring a central moonstone cabochon in a closed setting. The ring is adorned with two mermaids, a bearded man and a woman, whose tail ends come together to form the ring; the two characters are joined by a winged child (probably Eros), depicted twice. Their presence simulates a sense of movement, as if they are encircling the ring to convey a message. The subject of this ring could be that of Adam and Eve, but the use of mermaid themes suggests a mythological rather than a religious subject. However, in the early 20th century, dreamlike and chimerical subjects were reappropriating classical themes. Similar jewelry was created by René Lalique, Falize, François Rupert Carabin, etc. This is an antique ring from the late 19th to early 20th century, very nice patina, Art Nouveau period.
