A vintage ring in 18k gold set with an organic gem, a pink coral also called “angel skin”.
Angel skin cabochon coral ring
Description
Angel skin cabochon coral ring in 18 karats yellow gold. A pink coral cabochon decorates the center of this ring. The coral is in a closed setting, in a pearled gold frame, on an openwork basket. The pink color known as “angel skin”, boké or magai coral, is the most sought-after colour, along with the natural red. It has the typical “flame” growth lines that are clearly visible to the naked eye. Vintage ring from the 1970s/1980s.
Eagle head hallmark, illegible goldsmith’s hallmark.
Coral is a gem of organic origin. Only the limestone branching trunks of certain corals are used in jewellery. Its colour is due to organic pigments close to carotene: varying from blood red to white, passing by the pink “angel skin”. Currently, most coral species are protected under CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
