Antique Perpignan garnet ring
Description
Antique Perpignan garnet ring in 18k rose gold. The ring is set with a faceted rectangular-cut garnet surrounded by sixteen garnets. The main stone is mounted on a structure fixed by fasteners to the ring head. These Perpignan-cut garnets are mounted on foils and set in a closed setting. They usually have a rare raspberry, pink-red colour, typical of Perpignan jewellery, with a palette of shades that reveals itself in the sunlight. The ring is delicately decorated with leaves on the shoulders.
These stones are called “Perpignan” or rose cut, and are faceted on the top but flat on the bottom. The gold structure is finely decorated with triangular V-shaped figures on the edges, the bottom of the bezels is curved.
Regional jewel from the beginning of the beginning of the 19th century, France.
The foil is an old technique consisting in placing a sheet of metal under the stone, at the bottom of the bezel, in order to accentuate its brightness. The cut and method of manufacture of these Catalan jewels dates back to the 18th century.
