Sentimental jewelry


Sentiment jewelry is a special name for jewelry that was worn in the 19th century. These are jewels that we wore in memory of the loved one or passed away. Often these jewels contain inscriptions or symbols, or even elements reminding the person for whom this jewel is intended. It can be hair or even teeth sometimes. In a “Memento Mori” or mourning jewelry context, the recurring symbols are the weeping willow, the hair, the urn. In the love context we find hidden messages, flaming hearts but also locks of hair, names. And they often feature words like “friendship” or illustrations of pansy flowers. They also sometimes have puns made with the colors of the stones.

    Augis medium love medal in 18 karat yellow gold (750 thousandths). Medium-sized circular love medal pendant, the “+” sign is set with an old-cut diamond and the “-” sign is set with two calibrated synthetic rubies. The medal is surrounded by a smooth rim. The background is decorated with radiating striations, highlighting the words “+ qu’hier – que demain”. The pendant refers to a quotation from a letter from Rosmonde Gérard, the poetess, to her love Edmond Rostand, the author of Cyrano de Bergerac: “For, you see, every day I love you more, Today more than yesterday and much less than tomorrow”. The contour of the jewel is decorated with 45 natural pearls, approx. 2 mm in diameter. The pendant is supported by three chains. Antique opening pendant, 1st French Empire/ Georgian period, circa 1800/1810.

Sometimes, a crown surmounts the heart, representing loyalty. It’s a jewel of sentiment, a ring sealing a union full of promise.

    Memento mourning ring in rose gold 14 karats (585). Memento mourning ring in navette shape. Under a bulging glass is an oval tray circled with gold bearing the initials JO for John Olding, embellished with half fine pearls. The medallion is set on a hairline background in a blue enamel surround with white dots. The shoulders, ring and underside of the plate are chiseled. On the reverse, the ring is inscribed: “Rev’d John Olding Oct 7, 1785 AE: 63”, indicating the identity of the person to whom this ring paid tribute. Antique mourning ring, called Memento ring, dating from the late 18th century, England.

    This mourning ring is an English ring made in honor of Reverend John Olding (1722-1785), who died at the age of 63.

    Marked with a cock’s head facing left, open beak, between 1798 and 1809.

    Mourning enamel secret belt ring in 14k gold. Souvenir ring in the form of a belt, enameled in black and decorated with gold scrolls. It is an opening ring, onto a secret compartment by means of a push-button. It is likely that the ring once contained braided hair. The inside of the ring bears the inscription in French “au 11 août” (to August 11th) and twice the number 8 in Roman numerals (VIII). Antique ring, circa 1830-1850, bearing Dutch import hallmarks.

    Hallmark 14 inside the system, Dutch boar hallmark (import hallmark from 1831 to 1893), exempt from inspection.
