Cameo jewelry is jewelry decorated with a cameo or an intaglio. What is the difference?

Cameos are stones (often agates) or shells with several layers, which are carved in such a way as to reveal a pattern through the different colored layers. Generally, they are female profiles in the Antique style, but all motifs are possible. The intaglios are the opposite of cameos: it is an engraved stone that is applied to wax to reveal a design.     Moor head cameo ring in 18 karat yellow gold. Antique ring set with a two-tone agate cameo carved with a Moor profile. The shoulders of the ring are decorated with stylized leaves. This type of jewelry is called “Blackamoor”, and emerged in the Decorative Arts in Europe, particularly in Venice, during the 19th century. Antique cameo ring, 1900.
