Victorian snake garnet ring in 18k yellow gold. This ring takes the form of a snake winding twice around the finger. The head of the snake is decorated with a round red garnet and delicately chiselled with patterns. It rests on the two rows formed by its body and surrounded by its tail. Ring of the 19th century, France.

Marked with a horse's head (1838-1919)

Condition : small chip on the garnet, invisible without loupe.

Historical point : the subject of the snake has always been very popular, especially in northern France where it was considered a symbol of eternal promise and commitment. Snake engagement rings became popular after Queen Victoria chose one for herself at her wedding to Prince Albert in 1840.
