Victorian caterpillar articulated brooch

This jewel has already gone to its new home

Victorian caterpillar articulated brooch in 18 karat gold and silver. This late 19th-century insect brooch takes the form of a caterpillar, with each body part articulated to suggest movement. The insect is set with 85 rose-cut diamonds, rubies, and round demantoid garnets. The gold is chased for added realism. The safety chain was likely added later. It is probably a piece of jewelry made in Russia before the 1917 Revolution: the naturalism of the animal and the use of rose-cut diamonds help to place the era; the demantoid garnets may suggest the geographical origin. Caterpillar insect brooch, late 19th century.
