Georgian dove micromosaic brooch
This jewel has already gone to its new home
Georgian dove micromosaic brooch in 14 karat gold, depicting two doves, one perched on a flowering branch. The octagonal brooch features an exquisitely delicate micromosaic plaque. The two birds are shown in close embrace, their beaks touching in a gesture of "kissing," an allegory of love. This work is reminiscent of Giacomo Raffaelli (1753-1836) in the way the naturalistic subject stands out against an intense blue background. The technical precision is remarkable: the gradations of white, gray, and beige on the birds' plumage create such a realistic effect of relief and texture that it resembles a miniature painting. The meticulousness of the spun glass tesserae and the attention to detail demonstrate a virtuosity characteristic of the finest Roman workshops. Antique micromosaic brooch, circa 1790, Grand Tour, likely from Italy.
