[message]Art Deco swimming medal
This jewel has already gone to its new home
Art Deco swimming medal in gilded silver 800 thousandths (vermeil). Medal with a sports theme depicting a swimmer practicing crawl in the sea (known as "open water"). The reverse of the medal is decorated with a blank cartouche surrounded by a laurel wreath. Swimming has been part of the Summer Olympic Games program since the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. But since the swimmer is depicted in the sea, it is possible that it is also a triathlon medal: the triathlon format, included in both men's and women's Olympic events, involves athletes completing 1,500 meters of open water swimming, 40 kilometers of cycling, and finishing with a 10-kilometer run. Antique medal, circa 1900, signed S.J. Sport jewelry collection.
