Victorian Perpignan garnet necklace
Description
Victorian Perpignan garnet necklace in yellow and rose 18 karats gold. The necklace is composed of three elements adorned with oval facetted garnets and connected by chains. A garnet at the end of a rigid rod is supported below the central garnet. The four garnets are cut in “Perpignan cut”, foiled and set in a closed setting. They have a unique raspberry, pink-red colour, typical of Perpignan jewellery, with a palette of shades that reveals itself in the sunlight. These stones are known as “Perpignan” or rose-cut and are faceted on top but flat on the bottom. The rose gold frame is finely decorated with triangular V-shaped figures on the edges, the bottom of the bezels is curved. In contrast, the chain is in yellow gold. Regional jewel from the middle of the 19th century, France.
Did you know it ? The foil is an ancient technique of placing a sheet of metal under the stone, at the bottom of the bezel, in order to accentuate its brilliance. The cut and method of manufacture of these Catalan jewels dates back to the 18th century.
