Victorian silver niello and vermeil watch chain. This piece of jewel is made of links of different colors intertwined into each other. Some of them are pink, others are silver with black stripes. This black work on the silver is called niello. It is a goldsmith’s skill that consists in applying a black substance on gold, silver or copper in inlay. This substance is called niello (from the Latin nigellus meaning “blackened”), a black metallic sulphur which includes copper, silver, lead or borax. This chain was originally a vest chain, attached to the jacket and to which a watch was attached. Today it can be worn as a bracelet. Jewel from the end of the 19th century, late Victorian period.
