French Victorian Cameo earrings

Antique French earrings set with cameo shell in a bezel set, adorn with seed pearl.

Description

French Victorian Cameo earrings in yellow gold 18 karats. Two shell cameos (carved in a white and orange shell) in a closed pearl setting adorn these earrings. Four half-pearls framed the setting on the sides, top and bottom. The cameos depict a woman in profile with antique hair style.

Shell cameos are usually made from a giant clam called Tridacna Gigas. This is an ornamental gemstone that has been highly prized since antiquity, especially for the manufacture of cameos. Indeed, when it consists of several layers of color, the shell can be engraved in relief or carved, to obtain a pattern.

Two owl punches. French work from the middle of the 19th century.
