Description

Art Deco coral choker necklace with gold clasp. This necklace is entirely made of flat and beveled coral sticks, giving a “radiant” effect to the jewel, giving an Egyptian revival motif, very fashionable at this time. The pattern graduate in size, from the smallest sticks to the largest. The clasp is a cylindrical ratchet box in 18 karat yellow gold, accompanied by a safety chain. Art Deco necklace, first part of the 20th century, France.

Gemological point: Coral is a gem of organic origin. Only the branched calcareous trunks of certain corals are used in jewellery. Its colour is due to organic pigments close to carotene: varying from blood red to white, passing by the pink “angel skin”. Currently, most coral species are protected under CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
