Cameo jewelry is jewelry decorated with a cameo or an intaglio. What is the difference?

Cameos are stones (often agates) or shells with several layers, which are carved in such a way as to reveal a pattern through the different colored layers. Generally, they are female profiles in the Antique style, but all motifs are possible. The intaglios are the opposite of cameos: it is an engraved stone that is applied to wax to reveal a design.     Antique necklace cameo pendant in 18 karat yellow and rose gold (750). Necklace featuring a photo medallion centered with an agate cameo of a woman profile with an antique hairstyle. The cameo is surrounded by a finely braided circular gold element, similar to the thick chain. The medallion is in rose gold and opens onto a compartment that can hold a photograph or a lock of hair, protected by glass. The necklace chain resembles a tube of gold braiding, giving it a slight elasticity (like a spring). It closes with a ratchet box concealed in the body of the necklace. The medallion pendant was made by Lucien or Laurent Nicot (active in Paris from 1854 to 1903).

    Victorian agate cameo pendant in yellow gold 18 karats decorated with the profile of the goddess Flora, wearing flowers in her hair. The agate has three layers: gray for the background, white for the profile, brown for the flowers in the hair. The cameo is set with fleur-de-lis claws. Four old- European cut diamonds, as well as eight rubies (including a red stone) frame the cameo on a curved black enamel band. Jewel of the second half of the 19th century, French Napoleon III period or Victorian period.

    Two owl hallmarks.

    Height : 5 cm

    Width : 3 cm

    Condition : small accident on the upper flower button of the headdress, a very slight jump of enamel in the thickness on the left part. A ruby that has been replaced by a red stone (top right).

    Note: this jewel has been transformed, the pendant was originally a brooch.

    Weight of the stones: the 4 diamonds weigh about 0.32 carat in total; the 7 rubies weigh about 0.35 carat in total.
